Money. You can’t live with it and you can’t live without it. It is sometimes hard to come by and it is often hard to save.Money-clip-art

In order for you to be able to travel, you have to make some sacrifices in your day-to-day life, but, in the end, they are all worth it for the experience of seeing a new place.

Here are some tips of what you can do in order to save for travel:

1. Cut cable – 9 times out of 10 there isn’t anything on TV that is worth watching except maybe the news and a few other shows. By cutting cable, you can at least $60 per month.

2. Bring your lunch to work – By bringing lunch to work each day, you can save an average of $50 per week. It is tough sometimes to pass up an easy lunch out when all you have is canned soup, but wouldn’t you rather have tapas in Barcelona?

3. Cook at home – Cooking at home is not only a way to spend time together, but it is also a way to save money and control what you eat. Restaurant dinners can easily cost $40 for two people. By buying grocery items on sale once and shopping local at Farmers Markets, you can save $200 per week.

4. Buy used – By buying items from the Salvation Army, antique stores, clothing exchange stores and only shopping during sales, you can save thousands of dollars every year.

5. Make a budget…and stick to it – If you can document how much is coming in and how much, you can tell if the “going out” budget is creeping up higher than it should or whether if you have a little bit extra for a special treat out.

6. Pick free things to do for fun – It can be easy to meet friends out for dinner and drinks on any given night, but why not try free things in your community. There are festivals, parks, the beach, the lake and many other items that are free to enjoy.

7. Pay off credit cards in full every month – This can be tough for some who may have gotten carried away or had an emergency, but if you are paying interest, you are basically throwing money out the window. Once you are able to get control of your finances, try to pay every bill in full every month. The savings alone from not paying interest are worth a trip.

8. Speaking of credit cards …pick a good one – Travel credit cards can be a great tool if you treat them correctly. Good cards often offer points that can be redeemed for cash or travel after spending a certain amount. Just make sure you pay off your balance every month.

9. Always be open for new opportunities to make money – If you are open to the idea of doing a little extra work for a little extra money, that will go a long way when budgeting for travel.

10. Don’t be impulsive – After you have spent months saving and making sacrifices for the “big trip,” make sure you take time to do your research before buying that expensive plane ticket or booking that exclusive hotel room. There are plenty of ways to find cheap flights or save money on accommodations. Just take a moment, breathe and get ready for a fun adventure.
